Wrongful Death Statistics

San Francisco Wrongful Death Statistics

For San Franciscans, unintentional injuries are the 5th leading cause of death. The amount of premature deaths in 2016 was about 286,000, which was about 4,000 more deaths than in 2014. The rate of accidental death in the San Francisco Bay Area is shocking, and saddening, especially if someone else is at fault in those circumstances.

In a ‘Medical Malpractice Review’ conducted by The Risk Authority, they notated $381 billion were awarded in 2017 to wrongful death cases. The average award being $17.8 million between years 2008 and 2017. From one group they studied, they found that 80% of injuries occurred in hospitals. Medical malpractice is a scary, but very real thing in the state of California. If you believe you or a family member is not receiving proper care, seek guidance as soon as possible to recover justice for your loved ones.

Another devastating rate of wrongful deaths are due to car and other motor accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

notated motor vehicle accidents as California’s leading cause of accidental death; the third leading cause of death in San Francisco for ages 15-24 and the 5th leading cause of death for San Franciscans aged 25 – 34. In many of California’s auto accident deaths, a majority of the accidents were due to driver’s negligence, distraction being a primary attributor. In terms of truck accidents, semi-truck and other large commercial vehicle accidents, nearly 300 deaths occur each year in California.

Construction-related deaths are also problematic in California. In 2015, four main issues were the leading cause of construction industry deaths:

  • Slip and Falls
  • Electrocution
  • Workers getting stuck in or between equipment
  • Collapsing objects, being struck by objects or hit by objects

These deaths were said to account for over 60% of deaths. With over 300 fatalities happening in the workplace each year, about 100 people are killed by machinery and other equipment, and about another 100 involve a motor vehicle. In addition, toxic exposure and fires account for less than 1% of California deaths each year. These are often cases of negligence in the workplace. Of workplace deaths under federal statistics, the Associated Press found that older workers are killed at higher rates than younger workers.

As you can see, San Francisco, California has a contemptible amount of unnecessary deaths each year. By means of negligence, medical malpractice, auto accidents and more, wrongful deaths are an issue in the Bay Area.
